When another user messages you, how you are notified depends on if the IM section is open or not.
When the IM section is collapsed, the IM icon on the toolbar will flash and an alert chime will sound:
If IM is open, a chat window will pop-up with the sender's message:
To mute the audio notification, click to disable.
