IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) is preferred over POP3 for accessing mail from multiple locations as it synchronizes content across all mail folders, leaving mail messages on the service provider's mail server. This ensures access to the same messages regardless of what device (e.g. computer, smartphone, tablet, etc.) is used to access email.

In addition to received messages, sent messages are also stored on the mail server. This means that messages sent from a work computer will be accessible from home or from a laptop while on the road. In essence, IMAP accounts display mail folders and content stored on the mail server - each device with IMAP access will synchronize content back and forth.
